Title: power steering
Post by: krazi on August 22, 2006, 12:21:07 AM
the steering pump on my wagon pooped out on me a few days ago, and I needed to get to work, so I took the belt off. I like the way it sounds without that whiney pump, so I was wondering.... would I be able to use my new tie rod ends in a manual rack? if not, one trick I heard is to fill the rack with fresh fluid, and move the lines so the in goes straight to the out. kinda like a U. any advise would be appreciated

I have looped the rack lines on my racecars and pulled the pumps off, and I have seen 2 kit cars with power racks and fuel filters where the lines attach.

It will most likely have a different ratio than a 'regular' manual rack, but I think it will work for you.

I need to ask: what fluid do you have in the pump? Regular p/s fluid will kill these Pinto pumps, not to mention make them very noisy; They do die with the correct ATF too.

I have been running regular steering fluid. what grade/type of trans fluid do you recommend?
