Title: I've got a buckin' bronco
Post by: CONSFIRE on August 19, 2006, 05:15:18 PM
Need some help here guy's... the car started acting strange last Sunday, sputtering, surging, running rough. I've replaced the fuel filter and points, double checked the timing, plug gap and point gap also checked for carbon tracking in the cap. All ignition parts are new as of last spring('05),I put maybe 800 miles on it a season,The car is a '71 with a 1600 cc motor/4 speed,it misbehaves all through the gears, under load, let off on the clutch and it smooths right out. The carb is not electric, the cooling system is routed through the one side of the carb. HELP.... I'M AT THE END OF MY ROPE HERE!!!!!

Hey Cons,
Sorry to hear that...off the top of my bald head, it sound`s like a timing advance problem...be it vacuum or mechanical...you say it idle`s fine but buck`s and jump`s under a load? Have you checked the weight`s and spring`s on the mechanical advance and the hose on the vacuum?   Hope this help`s...
Rex

If the problem is ONLY there under load, I'd think strongly about when and where you got gas last (your regular station, or some place different)  and what the weather has been like compared to when the problem started. Bad gas(low octane or stale) or heavy accumulations of water, (probably from condensation), can cause bucking/surging/power loss under load, all by itself.

If you're game, and haven't solved the problem yet, try adding a couple of containers of gas drier to the tank before altering any adjustments.  It's cheap, quick, and best of all,  won't hurt anything, even if it doesn't solve the problem.

Problem solved....bad carb! Got a rebuilt one out of the west coast and the car runs fine.
