Title: Timing Belt replacement on 73 2000cc motor
Post by: Cookieboystoys on August 17, 2006, 10:29:23 AM
mine has a chunk missing from the belt so needs a replacement. car is running fine so simple removing the old and replacing w/new should go smooth.

however....

I have replaced the one on my 77 2.3 and was able to remove and install new belt without removing the bottom pully. It was a bit of wiggling but got the belt around the bottom pully on the 2.3

on the 2.0 it looks like I will have to remove the bottom pully to change the belt...

can anyone confirm that I will have to remove the bottom gear or is there an easier way to replace??

I did a search thru the forums and couldn't find anything and manuals are not real clear on this...

Help Please??? Need answer today as I will start doing this tonight regardless.

My experience is with 71 & 72 2000cc's engines, but they should be the same.  The bottom gear and/or pulley do not need to come off.  The only tight spot is between the pulley and the timing pointer.  With some patience and twisting the belt to get a notch aligned with the timing pointer, it slides through.  To loosen the tensioner with out totally removing it, loosen the retaining bolt, then I use a old cut off push rod (hollow stiff tube) slid over the end of the tensioning spring wire to lever it.

good luck

nope... not gonna work. I'm going to have to pull off the bottom pully, the timing mark would be easy to get past but there is a plate behind the pully in the way. I would guess it's a belt guide to make sure the belt doesn't come off the gear but reguardless of what it's there for it's in the way and not enough room to get past. Tried to take pictures of it but can't get a good one.

now a new problem... pully came off easy but need special ford tool T71P-6603A to loosen the tensioner pivot

looks like a star bit but looks to have 10-12 teeth, a 6mm allen wrench is the closest I could find that would fit.

the 6mm is still a little loose and I did try it but could tell it was ready to strip so quit.

anyone have any ideas??? anyone???

try a torx 45. or 40. i used to work at ford, and always never had the right tool. you learn how to improvise real quick there. my next bit of advice would be when you get the bolt out, replace it with a 6point 7/16" head on it. then enjoy!!!!

we tried a couple torx 45 was to big and 40 was to sloppy. The 6mm allen was close and almost worked but it's on there good and wouldn't budge.

I've been spraying it down w/WD40 and tapping on it w/a hammer... might help the next attempt

I'm gonna call the ford shop tomorrow, see a friend who owns an auto repar shop and call the "old guy's" at Napa for ideas...

this really sux.... I was willing to work on this until it was done tonight, as it was I took the lower pully off and dead in the water.

spent more time getting tools out and putting them away then I did working on the car.

can't go any farther until I have this loose  :(

tensioner bolt is 10mm special  definately metric snap on has them and if they do then so do al the other tool truck guys.  go tho the dealer and see if they can order one for you.  I have 2 of them in my tool box at home right now,  same size also is used for removing the oil pump  only longer
