I am looking to build a mini stock to race on a dirt circle track. I'll be upfront I grew up a Chevy fan o I don't know jack about Fords, but with the rule we use it seems like a Pinto is the best place to start when you concider weight and parts avalabillity of the 2300 engine. My main question is what years do I want to look for? Was a d port 2300 ever available in a Pinto? What about transmisions, I know the 4 speed was available what else was there? What would be best for this alpication keeping in mind we reach top speeds of 65-70mph and average around 60. I want the lightest rotating weight even if I have to go in and have a few gears machined to lighten them (1st, 2nd, and reverse?, gears I would only use in the pits). What about rear ends? Were any made with the 9"? Some things we can't change not sure about rear ends. What gears were available? And finally is there any real aero advantage between the years? What year should I look for?
Send a copy of the rules you will be required to run under. I have been very successful using a older Must.2 and would give you any advice I have. You can send them to me or shoot me a PM of where I can read them Web wise. JIM
Here are the rules

I thought about a Must 2 but wouldn't a pinto be lighter? Thats my reasoning for choosing the pinto over most others. The drive train would be the same correct? I have only bench raced this idea so I will listen to experience but I want to start with as much advantage as posible.
Get this book: "Pony Stock" (I think, can't find it now) from Steve Smith publications.
When I find it I will post the ISBN#.
Bill
www.speedway.com sells that book.
I have Steve Smiths modified book so I might need to get that one too. Till then I would like help deciding what to get.
I ran mine on pavement, and did not get that book until after I was racing the car, but I did get a lot from it (I had a few ideas that I did not do until I saw them in that book).
Pintos are lighter than the MII.
Sedans have a more ridged body.
That book will answer all your other questions.
