Title: Starter issues
Post by: FCANON on August 07, 2006, 04:32:21 PM
OK... I pulled my 72 out and i forgot the problems I faced before I parked it. I kept getting weak starters.

The scoop is I have a Mustang II 4 speed bellhousing and fly wheel.
With the motor,  Headers  and cross member its a big ordeal to replace the starter.... So is there a good referance on a starter with out buying a mini starter?

Well I replaced the starter .... looks like my biggest problem is the old cables from the trunkmount
Or the safty cut off switch.....

I learned something new last nite, going to put the starter in my fresh 2.0. I have 3 starter's , 1 that is a year old from the 2.3 and 2 that are from the 2.0 that are very old. Oh my God, they sure look the same. Call NAPA and check it out the starter are the same, easy choice put the new one in and call it good ;D

Still fighting this thing....
the starter to me is drawing too many amps. I crank it with my charger set on boost 225 Amps and it will turn over a little better, or should I say enough to fire off....
The battery is a Optima 800 CCA.
I've replaces the Cable from the starter relay to the starter.
A new solenoid.
New starter.

The cables seem to really hot after cranking....

It just seems to me it should start rather normal...I have built hotter motors and they all started rather easy. the only difference is the battery in the trunk....at this point I'm venting....

Have you checked the block ground?  I had a starter problem with our Explorer recently, it was the block ground on the back of the block.

what size cable are you using?  should be as large as you can get

As well as the other items already mentioned and should be checked first is the resistence in the battery cables and the starter bendix.  If the Bendix is not moving freely that would cause this.  Is it a rebuilt starter?  You might want to try another starter to eliminate that.
