Post by: wang on August 04, 2006, 01:21:52 PM
new here, but always loved pintos since when i can remember from.  so just got my first mpg wagon woodgrain green, sweet i'll say.  1977, got it at used lot cheap.  i get home and run bad then started shooting small bits of metal out of tailpipe i don't know what may be.   some of bits were sparks when i saw wife drive awaqy and when back smelled funny.  how to find problem?

Welcome :welcome:
I'm sorry but it sounds like you have melted a piston. Its time for a rebuild on the engine. OR  MAYBE it might be the Catalytic Converter falling apart ????
Id at least tear the cat off and see if it might be the culprit . The top end is the next area to tear down to inspect the engine before you go too far. But Sparks coming out the tail pipe can be expensive bad news.  :sorry:

Do a compression test on the cylinders, pull the catalytic converter, take a good look at the spark plugs and distributor cap/rotor. I suppose the converter could be clogged with who knows what, overheating and causing the sparks and metal bits. A compression test will show you if a piston/rings are toast. If one cylinder (or more) is way lower than the other ones, it's rebuild time. Does it smoke?

I have no idea what a ferbulator is. Distributor? Carborator? Blinker fluid regulator?

Start with the simple stuff and work your way up. Good luck.

A Ferbulator???Whats next johnson shafts,ca-nibally pins, fuel injected bumper bolts. If you melted a piston you'll know. Cly will be dead at any engine speed below 4 grand Maybe not even then, and it will pump oil out of the breather.Makes a hell of a mess.More than likely it's the cat.
