Title: does anybody know what crank fire ignition is?
Post by: madmax96101 on August 04, 2006, 12:33:39 AM
I'm thinking about maybe getting a new carburetor and in the notes it says the 2.3 is going to need to have crank fire ignition to work. thank you for the help.

Which 2.3 is this?  There are a couple of different types of crank fire ignition systems but all the factory units are found on EFI controlled cars.  For instance the Corvette has been using it for some time now.  Never seen a 2.3 with one except for aftermarket.

Basically no distributor.  All the timing is taken off the crank.  There are different ways it is done from external sensors to internal units.  You should be able to find lots of examples on the internet with a google search.  There are even some aftermarket systems you can use on your 2.3.

Those auto parts stores crack me up, ...I think someone built in certain questions to their parts programs just to make the parts guy look stupid. You should have told them neither, it has EFI.

Ooops.  I probably should have mentioned that the technical name is DIS or Direct Ignition System.  This should get you started.
