Title: Installing Sport Mirrors.... Need the screw inserts?
Post by: TIGGER on July 30, 2006, 03:19:14 AM
I want to install sport mirrors on my 73 hatchback.  I installed the drivers side today.  It was fairly easy.  I have the matching passenger side (non remote) with the molding but I do not know where to get the inserts for the screws.  Does anyone have any idea's?

Mustangs Unlimited in Manchester CT sells a kit with the riv-nuts needed. I used their kit to install the right side mirror on the new door on Connie's car. The kit is cheap, but you should get a hardened bolt and nut for the install, and I reccamend tack welding the nuts after installing them just to be sure (a small tack on the rear of the front one and on the front of the rear, there is room for a small weld).

If you can't lay hands on a "riv nut" kit, you should be able to use some 3/16- 1/4 plate cut to match the mirror base. Then drilled & tapped for appropriately sized bolts. If there's enough force to pull this plate through the doorskin, then the mirror's toast anyways! LOL I used this method on my '74 MII.

Thanks for the input guys.  I looked thru my Mustangs Unlimited catalog and did not find anything.  I will take a look again.

It is not in the catalog, you need to call them. Ask for Kevin Gormley, tell him Bill Rainey told you to call. He is the tech guy there, and knows all the part #'s.
