I have this idea of using a 3.0 V6 vulcan from a mid 90's 2wd ranger in a pinto. I'd take the motor, ECU and tranny. I'd probably use either the rearend off the ranger, or more likely a rear end off a mustang. I think 145hp and 185tq would make it a worth while swap. It's also pretty much bullit proof and good on gas. Just wondering what you guys think.
I was looking into using the SHO motor from a Taurus for awhile. I bring it up because it is based on the Vulcan motor. I have never been impressed with the 3.0 Ranger motor. The torque curve sucks. If you are going to do something on that line I would step up to the 4.0. I have one in my current Ranger and love it.

I dunno, my mom's taurus has the vulcan and I love it. And the SHO taurus's motor is not related in any way to the vulcan, it was built by yamaha and the only thing similar is the bellhousing.
You're right but as near as I good figure the motor mounts also were the same as the Vulcan series. Does not matter as it won't fit. My vote would be the 4.0.

I really like the 3.0 vulcan though. Super easy to work on, pretty good power, great on gas. It's a great motor. If this was going to be a racer, I'd go 4.0, but since it's not, 3.0 is fine.
I like the EFI V6 idea too. (IMHO) The 3.0 is the best choice for a n/a V6 swap, good power and very dependable for a Ford V6.
I am getting a Super Coupe donor car soon (had a line on it for a few weeks now) for a Pinto swap, maybe. This V6 only came with a rear sump pan, like the 4.0 and 3.0. I know I can re-work a pan, but I don't know if there is room for the front sump (IF the engine is long enough to make a good size sump). Might need to push the engine forward a bit or re-work the crossmember, but until I get the engine I won't know. (not too crazy about the 3.8 but...)
Take a bunch of pics.

Bill,
I had a Super Coupe for a long time. They run good. Isn't the 3.0 out of the Ranger a multi fuel motor? Would pretty cool if all that could be incorporated into the swap as well.

Bingo. It takes E85 as well as regular gas or any combo of the two. Well, at least a lot of the years did, and the ones that didn't can be converted real cheap. That was a side thing I had been thinking on, forgot to mention it in my previous posts. I've been looking into making my own E85, but it seems its substantially more difficult than making your own diesel substitute.
Well it would be easy to find one. Get a Ranger with this decal http://www.bragg.army.mil/sustainability/e85site/images/roadandleaf.jpg (http://www.bragg.army.mil/sustainability/e85site/images/roadandleaf.jpg) on the tailgate and you got a winner. Tranfering everything over from there should not be to big of a deal.

Oh, I know. But its going to be difficult enough as it is finding a 3.0 V6 5spd 2wd ranger for cheap, never mind adding in the E85. The good thing is, on those engines all you need is to change a couple fuel lines (which would need to happen anyway since its going into a pinto) and a couple sensors, pretty sure the O2 sensor is different and I think there is an octane sensor as well, and I think it *might* take a different computer, but probably not. Even if it did I could get one at a J/Y for cheap.
When I did my last engine swap (SHO motor into a Comet) I hooked myself up with the local auto insurance auctions. You can buy salvage cars very cheap through these. I got a SHO that had been rearended but still ran (but could not drive) for 380.00. Then 150.00 deliver fee for a flatbed and I was in. Just another possible place for you to look.

Whoa! Super great idea! I hadn't even thought of that one. I'm going to have to look into doing that. I was thinking a wrecked ranger would be a good donor, but finding one would be hard, this will help alot! I knew there was a reason I should join this forum!
PINTOS RULE!
