So I've heard that it's pretty much impossible to find a replacement gas tank for a pinto. What do you guys do if you have a tank that leaks?
The radiator shop near my house repairs them.
Look in the parts for sale section of this forum or post a parts wanted.
Well, I don't have a pinto yet, I'm just doing research for now.
My gas tank doesnt have any holes.
The only problem is that it is rusted beyond your wildest dream in there. Can the rad shops fix that?
I see products on the net that are like sealer and liners for your gas tanks, would these work if its rusty?

I have known people that have used the "Kreem" and it works great. That said, it was on motorcycle gas tanks. I can't see why it would be too much different for a car tank, but you would need to make a cover plate to install over the sending unit hole and coat the tank with the sending unit removed. My concern would be sealing the cover on. Also, you would need to remove the filler tube and gasket, and from my experience, the are more likely to leak after re-installing.

I have used a Gas tank liner From Classic Auto Parts in OKC. This use to be Obsolete Ford till Ford went crazy with the lawers a few years back.
Anyways I have used junk from Napa and JC Whitney and had bad issues with the linner sepperating. But the Tank Liner from C.A.P. has held together I have this in my ...
74 MotoGuzzi Eldurado
60 Fordfalcon station wagon
1972 Pinto (I sold this tank but it was working well)
And 48 Ford 8 N....
Most of these have been done for over 8 years and I havent a issue.
Fallow the dirrections and I used solder in the big holes closed and line it...

So it doesnt matter how rusty it is, as long as you got a good product you should be fine. right?
I planned on using this kit from POR-15, people on the other fourm I belong too have used this with great results.

I also stopped by local rad shop that does gas tank repair,
They quoted me 70 for just having it cleaned, and 132 for having it cleaned and coated with liner.
I can get a complete kit for cleaning and lining the tank for about 70-75. So now I'm trying to decide if I want to do it and save 50 bucks that I can spend on new hard line or if I want to pay and not take the risk of me messing up. Hmmmm?
I'd do it myself personally. But I don't mind getting under a car and getting a little dirty. If you do, tank maintenance isn't something you'll be happy with. You will smell like gas, and you will get dirty.
Well the only reason I would have it done is that fact that I know it will be done right and if its not, I can have someone to blame bysides myself lol.
Oh no, getting dirty doesnt bother me a bit, Ive dropped that tank so many times to clean it its not even funny. Ive never owned a car that when you got in and turned the key you knew for sure it was gonna start. lol
