Title: Electric fuel pump in an EFI wagon
Post by: Gaslight on July 21, 2006, 07:44:17 AM
I am in the middle of adding an 2.3 turbo motor into my 74 wagon.  I had wrongly assumed that the sender in the tank dropped in from the top.  After getting under the car to disconnect some other stuff I discovered that the sender goes in from the bottom drivers side corner of the tank.  Since I had planned to graft in the Merkur sender assembly this creates quite a problem.  I would prefer to use an intank pump first.  Has anyone done this in a wagon yet or am I on my own in the search?

I also wanted to do it that way. There were too many issues (for me anyway) with getting it in the right position, having it so it will fit in the hole, not interfearing with the sending unit or baffles, worring about it coming apart, and running the wires, I just used the in-line pump. It has been in use for over 2 years and doing fine.

Not to say that there aren't any, but I know of no-one using an in-tank pump in a turbo Pinto.

That's what I was afraid of.  I have no problem using the inline pump but I prefer using an intank pump first.  I have done a number of intank pump conversions but they were always installed from the top.  Time to make some phone calls.

And by the way, anything less then 1/4 tank of gas in my Pinto will starve the fuel system, when I'm on it hard in the low gears, due to lack of baffles like the EFI tanks use.
