Title: tires for my '78 pinto
Post by: caravan3921 on July 08, 2006, 07:33:08 PM
Your advice, please: we will be replacing the tires on our '78 hatchback.  What type of tire should we put on our pinto to stay in keeping with the average pinto that rolled off the assembly line in that era?  I'm a purist and want to keep my car original looking. Right now, there are snow tires on the back that don't match the front tires;all four have white walls. My husband thinks the pintos we owned back in the 70s had white firestone raised lettering.   thoughts and opinions, please.

re: shocks:any recommendations or suggestions on replacing the shocks?  Thanks from Minnesota.

They had radial tires in 78. They had black wall, white wall, and RWL, depending on the wheels and what the owner wanted. The owners manual should give you the correct size.

I searched for over a month to find new 195-70-13's with RWL, ANY BRAND, and when I did I PAID for them. I found a guy that had 8, and we wanted a set AND a spare (if they were that hard to find, and ONE gets cut we would have three to take back off the car), but he would not brake up a set.... we got 8 (sorry, none are for sale).

The shocks were easy, just got them at NAPA (a while ago) and mounting them is easy most of the time. The ONLY thing I can say is that the lower bolts on the fronts tend to rust and make it very hard to get them off. A garage can use a torch on them if you don't have one, then all you will need is new bolts.
