Title: Chasnged head gasket...car won't start... any ideas?
Post by: CraftyCreations on July 06, 2006, 08:20:32 PM
Ok we changed the head gasket and rehooked up all the other stuff.....
set the timing belt where the lines are and all the stuff that the Chilton's book said to do.
Car will not start.
2.3 motor
74 Pinto
It spits gas straight up from the carb when trying to rol over...once it shot flame! YIKES !
changed the spark plug wires to the diagram in the book, then it rolls and rolls the starter, but backfires through the tailpipe...
Is this still a timing issue or what?

We went through all the steps to change these things just as instructed in the manual..only to have it not start.
It ran BEFORE we changed the head gasket, but not well.

I simply don't want to WAIT any more to get it going!

Any help would be greatly appreciatted!

Jody

Sounds like timing to me.  Have you verified that the distributor is in the right spot?

I agree. Check the plug wires (both ends), the dissy, and the belt.
