Does anyone know if the rubber ring on the steering shaft joint.just before steering rack can be replaced or do I need to find the whole shaft??
Mine broke
1978 V8 pinto; : have to take left side manifold off to get at at...
There have been a bunch of posts about this (but not the v8 part). Check out the FAQ section and in this section too.

Sorry If i posted in the wrong forum...
I searched everywhere for this topic but found nothing,
Well after taking manifold off I was able to get at the shaft;
This is actually kinda scary knowing this thing fell apart like this;I just had the engine out a couple months ago and it looked fine then.
Anyway;being in the Auto wrecking business here in Canada I checked our parts Hotline and can;t find any wreckers across Canada with pinto or mustang ii parts. :what:
I contacted a great Ebay seller and he will UPS me the part from US...
Check Your Steering on your old Pinto!!!!!
This was not in the wrong section, it is just that this is asked about VERY often (FAQ). In one of my posts (a long time ago) I put in the NAPA part # for a good replacement "rag" (for a different application as there are none listed for pintos as you know), if I get the chance I will look for it. The threads in both sections have various titles, but should reference the steering somehow.
Yes, I agree EVERYONE should look at that item. The good news is that IF no-one has ever messed with the origanal one, Ford installed a safety bracket to keep the steering operatanal if the joint goes.

Thanks turbo....
After taking everything apart I found that the original one is not made of rubber like most cars. :what:
What is this thing made of??
Now I;m concerned that this thing fell apart because of heat with the V8 manifold being so close to it?????
I drove this thing a couple years with the first 302 I put in it.
And recently put in a new engine.
anyone have this problem because of heat???
Tim
Ford used a plastic. I don't think the heat had anything to do with it unless it was melted, because the all seem to self-destruct. I used a slab of sidewall from a old tire to fix my first one on the racecar, but like I said there is a part from NAPA that works I just have not looked for the number yet, but it is posted in the help section somewhere.

I think the tire sidewall replacement is the best anyway. I was in a hurry once and welded one on from an 84 mustang. it didnt last but a couple races anyway, had to make one from a tire.
