Here is the story, I have a 72 wagon, 2.0 (bored .030),4 speed, 8 inch rear with 3:55 gears, 390 cfm 4bbl on a weiand intake, headers , MSD 6a hooked to recurved stock dist, Head cut .100. Engine also equipped with adjustable cam gear, Crankshaft power pulley and flex cooling fan.
The engine is presently fitted with a unknown manufacturer cam with 453 lift and 292 dur. (intake/exhaust),it runs pretty good but wont idle under 1100 rpm. Would Stage one cam be too mild to work with my other components? What are the specs on a stock cam (for comparison reasons only)? Are their any manufacturers still making cams for this engine ? Looking for a little better streetability. Any tuning suggestions would be more than welcome.

Hello 72 wagon.
How much fuel pressure are you running?
What size jet are you running in your holley 390 cfm carb?
Do you have that nasty flat spot where you start to take off and then falls on face? and then GLH????
I can help.
The 453 cam is still a pretty mild cam.
I'm running a .480 on a turbo 2.0

I am running a Holley Electric Pump that I believe is putting out about 4 psi. The carb jets I don't remember the carb was set up using a chassis dyno and exhaust analizer over 20 years ago was pulling about 140 hp and that was before the MSD was installed and running a Offy intake. Took the offy off a few years back and put the Weiand on and it felt (seat of the pants) more responsive to throttle change. It actually runs prety good no flat spots. The secondary vacum spring was changed out so the secondaries open only above 3500 rpm (est).
Your Idling problem might be related to a vacuum leak. Your cam choice is good for what you have done to the engine. I would not try another cam , unless you are wanting a little more out of your engine.
Have not had a vacum gauge on it lately. wiil be a good idea to check. How low should I be able to get the idle with this cam? The carb has had all choke parts removed for greater air flow, I am thinking of reinstalling to improve cold starts. Dont drive in the winter.
