Title: Repair of gass tank and adding sump
Post by: bobcatkmaynard on May 03, 2006, 12:41:11 PM
I need to repair the gass tank in my '77 Bobcat wagon.  It has a leak (or two) in the seams.  I would be happy with just sending it to a repair shop, but I have to do more to it.  I have a fuel injected turbo 2.3 in the car.  It gets major fuek slosh when turning or taking off hard.  I need to get a sump on the bottom of the tank or fab an in-tank pump.

1) I would like to weld the leaks.
2) I would like to weld in the sump.
3) How do I evacuate the tank of fumes and fuel so I can weld it?
4) Does anyone have experience as to where the best sump location is on these tanks?
4) Any thoughts on an in-tank pump?

Thanks,
Ken

I would find another tank, and would install a frame mounted fuel pump.  One from a fuel injected Ford truck in the early 90s will work.

Will a simple change of the fuel pump fix the slosh problem?  Right now I'm running an external VW CIS pump.  It is a high pressure/fairly high volume pump.    Boy, I feel stupid after I read my post.  I should borrow a dictionary before I attempt to spell "gass"!  I guess that's why there is a spell check and preview choice at the bottom.

I also have a 2.3 turbo in my Pinto and changing to a different fuel pump will not help.  You need to add the sump or get a fuel cell.  I am still running the stock tank but don't go under a 1/4 tank.  Don't want to add or change the tank because I want to keep the stock look...check my site.

Ken,

Unless you're a certified hazardous materials welder, don't even think of welding the tank yourself. Even most pro weldors won't DO welding repairs to gas tanks.

If you have a few pinholes or seam leaks and you're really committed to keeping the same tank for some reason, there is a product that is used to coat the insides of gas tanks, and that would be a lot smarter thing to try. The tank still has to be removed from the vehicle, generally abraded inside to loosen rust, cleaned inside with an included solvent and/or etch, then coated.

It's mainly intended for vehicles that do NOT have new tanks available, such as antique vehicles, tanks that are prohibitively expensive to purhase, or tanks that might otherwise have to have expensive paint work done (motorcycles).

My uncle just had that process done to a tank for his 57 pontiac. he told me it took the place 3 tries to get all the holes fixed, but the price was reasonable.
