Title: Im Building a motor. Have an AK Miller turbo Kit should I use it ????
Post by: ETPinto on April 17, 2006, 10:15:02 PM
Hi all, heres the scoop. Seabiskit started developing a bit of a hiccup.  After looking at the normal bits I checked compression, sure enough #1 was at 65lbs.  This was a change from the last check when all 4 were between 145-155.  So i pulled the head really hoping for a bad gasket, no such luck, #1 had several fresh vertical scratches that would just barely catch a finger nail.
Now I am waiting on my tax $$$$.$$ and contemplating what to do.
Use my A.K. Miller turbo setup or go 10ish on the compression with a moderate performance cam, header.
So anyone who has an opinion please chime in, If I decide to forgo the boost I will most likely sell the Miller setup to further fund car improvements.  I just put a brand spankin new webber dfev on the thing, apparently not in time, as the old dgv I was using was jetted too lean.....my bad  :'(
I am having the motor balanced and deck height setup as well,  anyone with the expertise to help me with a laundry list of proper procedures on this build please share.
Thanks ET

Hello ET,
The Miller kist is the way to go, IF you use a WASTEGATE!
The impco valve is too old school.
Hope AK is smiling down on me to see my Turbo 2.0 made it through the 4000+ mile trip last week.
I'm here for you if you have Q,s

The turbo should be way easier to drive on the street.

Any advice on a waste gate, I have the impco valve,  is there a salvage gate I can adapt economicly  Saab or other ?  I have Saab only yard right near my house Im friendly with the guy I used to drive an 83 turbo 900 4 door loved that car even though it was an understeering swine in the twisties.  Point it straight and it went like you know what, it had been tuned by a notorious Saab Mehanic who worked dark magic on several different relays LOL.  I diverge....
Tony what Pistons did you use and how much were they ????
Anything sketchy about going the whole 30 over and using the Esslinger?? 2.3 longer rod conversion on the 2.0 with a turbo.
Keep in mind Im building a daily driver =DAILY= that needs to last.  I wont be boosting for max results just normal fast street use.

Hello ET,
I used JE dished Forged pistons.
The impco would be OK for a street driver Pinto.
Boosting about 6 psi with good gas and stock pistons would be about the limit.
Installing a water injection kit will get you to 10psi
I would stay away from the long rod for the turbo.
Nobody makes pistons for that set-up.
A 4-off piston set would be costy. I know! Because that is what I wanted to do.
There are many waste gates that sell on ebay.
Some cheep some not. welding in the proper flange is not a problem with a knowing welder.
Do not fall into the trap of a blow off valve.
Those are used only on BIG boost engines.
