the T5 is the stronger tranny between the two. for stock engines, either will work fine, but if you are modding, the T5 is teh only way to go.

Hello BBfox,
I think the Pinto 4 speed is plenty strong.
At this point the newest Hummer trans is 25+ years old.
Most are worn beyond use.
Parts might be a problem too.

The T-5 is newer. Parts are available.
Many companys offer re-build kits for the T-5.

T5 stronger? Maybe?
More available parts and companys to help with re-building? YES!
Lower 1st gear and over-drive... Absolutely a +.

As already stated, for stock engines either trans is fine.  As for strength, the t5 is probably a little stronger.

The only problem I've heard of with the 4 speed is if you shift too fast, the shifter will get jammed in  2 gears at once.  My dad had this problem in his 73 and had to drop the transmission in the edge of a corn field  just to remove the shifter and pop something (cant remember what) back into place.

The t5 is the stronger by far.we were going through 2 or 3 4 sp a year.now that we have gone to the t5 its been 6 yrs and the only failure has been a throughout Bering.

Allright, here's my two cents.  The t5 was great, unfortunately it scattered.  I've gone through two of them now on my Pinto (and 3 four-speed stock pintos).  Now granted, 19 pounds of boost on a Turbo 2.3, does something or another to the trans, so I decided to go with the c4 auto.  Let's see what this will do (it's not in yet).

You mean my german 4 spd pinto transmission will hold up to a 2.3 turbo....even if i give it all it has....as long as its unmodified? I wont run it forever, but i did just put a freshly rebuilt pinto 4 spd in my car last fall and i kinda like the gearing in it.... but i do want the overdrive too so eventually i will go to a T5. I dont think the pinto clutch will hold up to the 2.3 turbo power very well...... i cant seem to get even my new pinto clutch to grab like it should (rev it up and dump the clutch and it revs up but wont spin the tires anymore like it used to) and it doesnt seem like its adjusted too tight, because then the clutch pedal would atleast be at proper height and mines actually jsut a bit lower than it should be.
