Title: 2.3 question
Post by: Gaslight on April 09, 2006, 09:12:48 PM
Can a 2.3 ranger long block be used as a direct replacment for a 2.3 in a 74?  So the intake and everything can just be swapped over and away you go?

the ranger block is rear sump. you have to redrill the block for the oil dipstick. the boss is there you just have to drill it out and put the pinto front sump pan on.

The block should be pre-drilled for both dipstick locations. My rear sump 86 t/c donor had a plug in the front hole. I popped it out and plugged the rear hole with it. You will need the oil pan, and pick up from a pinto.

It sounds like I need to make sure its a early version of the 2.3 Ranger motor.  When they were still using the carb arrangment.  Rather than the full blown efi.

On all the newer blocks the area where the fuel pump lever goes in the block there is no hole so youll have to have that drilled out also.  The bolt holes are still there and threaded but the hole isnt.

That would sound like a great indicator then for a usable long block.  As long as that whole for the lever is present then the motor should be usable.  I guess the cylinder head ports then up to that point would be the same and allow me to bolt on the stock intake?

Thanks for the help.  I think I got enough info now I can buy the right motor the first time.

We have a 2.3 ranger head at our shop from a newer ranger that has round ports instead of the oval port or d-port style of intakes as far as i know the only real match up is an intake that esslinger makes for racing that style of head.

No but there are a number of reasons for that.  Some of the years came with intercoolers and some didn't.  The last couple of years of the T-bird came with a ECU labeled the "LA3" ECU.  It had a more agressive timing map as well as a few other features.  All the engines were basically the same.  But the turbo systems changed.  Even with the Merkur all three had turbo manifold changes and turbo changes.  Its hard to compare by model without considering years also.
