The cover does not need to be on, lots of people run without them, and some just cut the upper part off so they keep the timing mark. The covers do help to keep stuff from getting on the belt, and beteen the belt and the gears. If a small rock or something were to get kicked up and jammed in the belt, it could snap the belt. I know that it is not too likely to happen, but I lost a v-belt that way (had the tell-tale marks on the pulley).

You can leave it off, I've seen dozens that way with no adverse effects.

Isn't the timing pointer on the cover? Is there another type of pointer that would bolt on if the cover is removed?

Yeah, I think the manufacturer is called DIY

Might be able to use the existing cover as a guide to fab one using the lower mounting holes and the timing pointer location. I was thinking about doing this on mine, possibly making it out of 1/8" flat aluminum stock. The aluminum is easier to work with than steel, it's light, and shiny!
