Title: '78 280Z Independent Rear-End
Post by: eatmydust on March 13, 2006, 06:43:53 PM
Has anybody looked into sticking a 280Z Independent Rear-End into a Pinto Wagon?  For example, what about the gastank, spare tire, exhaust?

My main question is:  "Am I opening up a big 'ol can of worms here??"   :hypno:

That's about it - thanks for your input!

I never looked into doing one of those but I have thought about the IRS from a 82-86 Toyota Supra.  They are bullet proof.  And the IRS is completely self contained in its own framework that is just attached to the car at 6 points.  The sway bar even comes with it.  They all came with LSD third members as long as you get one from a P-type car (Supra with the fender flares).  The track width is almost spot on.  There is a down side though and that is that they are hubcentric assemblies and not lugcentric.  So you would have to be careful of that when buying wheels but I think the Nissan is also.  The shocks go up and mount to the body on top so there would be a bit of fabrication there but nothing compared to the work of putting the IRS from either into the car.  The wheel lug pattern on the Supra is 4 X 114.3 which is close to the Pinto but adapters would fix that or you could redrill the axle stubs.

There was a guy in San Diego that installed a Z rear end in his Pinto.

Did we discuss this z rear end a looong time ago,  I was talking to someone on here back in 98 or 99 about building a monoshock type rear independent suspension system, and whoever it was, was telling me about a car in california that went so well some of the tracks were telling him not to come back. Was this you i was talking too??

No, not the guy from California.  Just got this idea on my own - I like a challenge.  Was just curious to see if anyone had tried it.  I have the 280Z (for free LOL) and the skill, but the time, that's the big one.   :amazed:

Thanks for your reply - anyone else out there with any feedback??

Why not just use an XR4TI IRS?

Tony,

The XR4 has a moderate IRS and to put a decent LSD that can take any power is expensive.  Quaife makes one of the only real bolt in units and you're talking over a grand just for the unit and even then it really just does not drop in.  There is a guy in Washington developing a kit too make a 87-92 Supra thrid member bolt it.  That's how bad it is.  At least when you put any real power too it.
