Title: T5 to 2.0 What's needed? Details please...
Post by: osiyo59 on March 07, 2006, 01:09:34 PM
Ok, So now after carefully considering my course of action, I am "considering" leaving the 2.0 in the wagon and just putting a T5 behind it. The 4 speed box in there now is locked in 2nd gear and I can't get it out. I want to put my 2.3 in but am running short on time. I figured that I would just put the T5 in so I can drive it and do all the cosmetic stuff for now. In the mean time I would work on the 2.3 and set up the Turbo and everything before it goes in. I need to drop the compression on the 2.3 anyway to accept the turbo so it will just be easier to run the 2.0 for now. Once I do have the 2.3 ready for install will I need to get another bellhousing for it as well? All right guys, here is your chance to show me what you know, cuz I need the advise on how to proceed...Rob[/b]

The 2.3 t-5 bell should work IF the 2.0 has the upper bolt holes for the bell.

If so, get a pair of the stepped dowel pins and go to the t-5 thread in the FAQ section or in the my projects section. If not, maybe run with 4 bolts?

Please note I have never installed any 2.3 items on a 2.0, but I have heard lots about the other way: 2.0 bells on the 2.3 (c4).

There is a 4spd on ebay right now, the older steel case one for 39. Might be good to use for now.

If you need the pins, let me know. I  have a buddy that will be making some soon.

So, am I to understand that you are converting a n/a to a turbo?

(the following line to be read in the voice of Joe Peshi)
Are you sure?

Hey Bill, I figured it would be either you or Pintony that replied to my post. The answer to your question is "yes" I want to convert the 2.3 out of my 94 Ranger from n/a to turbo. I have read a lot on turboford.com and turborangers.com and have found that it can be done. The biggest hurdle is the compression of the stock ranger pistons - 9.5 to 1. From what I read the compression needs to be dropped to 8 to 1. The 94 2.3 block is already set up for the oil return line, it just has a plug in it now. I would like to maintain the 8 plug distributerless head assembly if that can be done. Any words of wisdom?...Rob

Yes: For all the work involved, just get a turbo motor.

Good running ones are still cheap and easy to find, and unless they have been modified, they will have the correct parts in them. If you have been to T/F.net, then you know how durable the stock t-engines are (the one in my pinto has 170k on it, but is all stock). If you get a running donor car, you will get all the "other" parts you will need too. As far as the 8 plug head, I think I have seen that the flow is not as good with those. Flow is KEY with a turbo motor.

Keep in mind that with a turbo, even the difference between 8.0 and 8.2 is more than you might think, so be sure you get it correct. (big can of worms again with that, I know it, so I will go deeper: high c/r with low boost is NOT the same as low c/r high boost)

I understand the do-it-yourself thing, and I am not saying don't do it, just take note what you will need to do to make it as "durable" as the stock t-engine.

BTW: Where's Tony?

HURRAY for the 2.0 :drunk:
The T-5  should not be that hard to do.
Remember that the Ranger tranny is NOT the same as a Mustang or T-coupe.

Well guess we got the same idea in reverse. I'm doing a 2.3 from 2.0. Have to use a 2.3 bell housing redone for the 2.0 and motor mounts are different. Need help E-Mail me at rkelly1499@sbcglobal.net. Have 2.0 out the you know what.
