Hey, i just got a 76 pinto runabout at a car auction for $125 and i was wondering how tuff it would be to put in a 289 and trans from a thunderbird into it. Does anyone know if the tranny casing and the engine casing line up and anything?? Any help will be very helpful.
Well I went with a 302 and C4 tranny. The tranny mount was my guide on the project. Used motor mounts from a 78 mustang II with a v8. Had to space the passenger side out about 3/8", the engine is actually level from side to side and tilts back from front to rear. Used the single V pulley system for the alt. water pump and crank pulley. Radiator is from older mustang (339 is their part number). Moved it forward about 1.25 inches and can still use the factory hood latch. Noticed most people cutting all that out, not what I wanted to do. Ordered 2 electric fans to mount on the front side of the radiator. The sway bar is another issue, but going to weld a channel in the oil pan to get around it. Shouldn't loose too much volume. One word of advise...RETROFIT all you can.
