Well, I went to Kemper Mississippi, to see about my engine... got there, made my way though about 20 feet of thorns and came upon what i was previously told to be a 1984 Cougar... pop the hood and find that its in pretty good shape for sitting for ten years... looks like someone broke into it and stole the alternator though. Start looking around and find that the radiator has 1975 stamped onto it... so my 84 is now 11 years older than i had thought.
Got onto the phone and made a call, seems that the car was parked just because the starter went out and that it was too hard to get to, so he gave up on it... also since it had been parked for so long with out antifreeze in it the freeze plugs popped out of the block... so hopefully the block isn't cracked and the cylinders aren't to far bad a nice boring couldn't handle...
Maybe my luck will be good,
Any tips?
Later,
Travis
302s are every where i wouldnt pull one out of the weeds becouse dirt, bugs, and god only knows what all have made there way though that intake and the moisture has probly done it also and scarred up the cyl. walls. i would expect to bore now or be ready to pull it back out
we havent taken it out of the Cougar yet... its still up in kimper... we plan to take the whole thing apart and replace what needs be...
Around where I live 302 are hard to find... and the ones that are around are expensive...
this one is for free... so.. were going to get it then see if its worth the trouble after taking it apart.
:)
do you ever see any 79-91 ltd, grand marquis, lincolns, or crown vics around in bulk every one of them had a 302 in them exept the ex cop cars they had a 351w in them and i cant even think of how many ive had of those and ive never spent more than $50 on each one if even that most people give them away, some will even pay you to take them.
if you find one 86 or newer they are roller motors
Hey,This is datazz.I'm not a mechanic,so is the roller motors better?If so I've got a 86 mercury with a 302 behind the garage.I was wanting to put a 302 in my pinto.
yes they create less friction whitch equals less heat whitch equals a little more power. but the cams are a little more pricey.
to tell if its a roller motor and having no clue what the motor came out of pull the intake off and look to see if theres a thing holding the rockers in just a little peice of tin , that means its a roller lifter motor.
diffrences other than that i think in cars 1980 and newer 302s they didnt have a fuel pump hole in the timing cover (may be wrong about the year) and they were tbi not a carb but you can make a carb bolt on with the proper gasket or just swap the intake to what ever you want to efi, tbi, 2bbl, or 4 bbl. the head sizes are diffrent but not sure what the diffrent cc difrences are in them. the bell housings are all the same and motor mounts are all the same just unbolt it and rebolt the style you want on it they made 2 diffrent styles the kind like trucks have where you slide the mount bolts into a hole and put the nuts on and the kind like the 79-91 cars had where you set it in the car and push a bolt threw the lower half of the mount but you can interchange them from one style to the other also the ones for the car that i explained they are interchangable from side to side
Hey,It was gave to my son for a derby car but he said I could have it.It's an 86 mercury grand marquis.I looked and it has a throttle body. Thanks again,I really appreciate it.
great derby car for a 77 and up class
also the torque converter will be diffrent with the aod tranny in the merc to any other tranny. the aod has 3 sets of splines in the converter and about all the other trannys (auto) have 2 sets of splines so if you forget this you will rember quick when it dont go back together very well - at least i did
I know about the lincolns, and the Crown vics... its just everyone has snatched them up... right before i knew i was going to want to put a bigger engine in there was a Crown vic for 400... but it was bought by the time i called... Im still looking but it cant hurt to see what kind of shape this engine is in.. since it is free and everything...
Ive called all around, ive asked around... there just isnt anything for sale at this moment.
Try any of the used engine houses around by you. Usually threy will deliver and they come with all the accesories. Ebay is another good place.
Jake

OUU, another challenge.... I love it. Looks like Ford Guy is worried that some of our lesser CI cars could take him out. Hmmm, lets see, I know Joe Morgan just ran an 8.88 With 155 CI motor, I wonder if the Ole 460 could keep up........... ;) ;D
