Title: Need advice on dealing with rear end howl..
Post by: powderblue76 on February 17, 2006, 06:16:48 PM
Yeehaw!
The rear end in my "new" Pinto is howling   :(  when I am accelerating, so...
What do you all recommend, a different rear, or getting a gear job done?
I have wanted to do a gear job myself, mainly so I have to buy more tools.. ;D
If a different rear, what will fit?
Just Pintos, or will other cars work?
I can do fabrication, so making and installing mounts in no problem.
I think I have 2.79 gears.
Thanks,
Mike

Change the whole rear end, easier & faster & cheaper.
Do a search on this sight, there is a lot of different rear ends that will fit.

Hi...
I agree with Bill...find another good rear end and do the swap...

We used to pack `em with white lead when I was a kid and drive the crap out of `em `til they "crapped" out!
Ahhh...the good `ol daze! :amazed:

Either turn up the stereo, or replace the rear. The tools and gears are way too pricey. If you need just a cheap and easy rear, and are planning to stay stock, the stock 6.75's are out there.

I don't know about the 9 inch, but the 8"s are fairly easy to find (for now). Ford never put the 9" in a pinto or any other car that would make it an easy "bolt in" (any that fit would have been modified to fit). Don't plan on seeing a 9" cheap either.

The easy way to tell a 8" from a 9": put a 6" extension on a deep socket. If you can put it straight on all the meatball to housing nuts, it is an 8", if not, it's a 9". (or just by the price)

Agree 77turbo, go with the 8 inch.  Try to find one out of a must. 2 and maybe you'll get one with the rear sway bar.. They handle so much better with that little baby. Yours is probably got worn out pinion bearings, a common problem with the 6.75.

if you want stock width  you can try a 89 mustang lx [4 cylinder]
ok 2300 cc automatic car-------[why ]???????? limited slip
and 3:73 gear

if me i would make it a posi or a locker.
i just put 1 under my 84 t bird 302. bolt in
you say you can fab
then get a 8 inch  locker  3:90 gears

like you said  make your own  brackets-------by the way dont forget
3 degree neg on the  pinion yoke  as you re weld your new spring perches if you use springs. wayne

3.90 gears for a ford 8"?????

There is no such gear for a Ford 8" rear.
