Title: Auto to manual conversion
Post by: Gaslight on February 10, 2006, 09:04:44 AM
Ok so I need to convert my auto 74 to a manual setup.  I need to get the pedals but is there anything else I should make sure I ask for.  Does the pedal assembly go up to a special crossmember under the dash that I will need to make sure I get.  Or does the auto under the dash crossmember work and I just insert the manual clutch and brake levers?

Your pedal mount frame will work, it has a place to bolt on the clutch pedal arm.  The driveshaft is a different length, you will need a shorter one.

Bill,

I am going to end up using a hydralic clutch so no matter what I have to make a new shaft.

Driveshafts are a lot easier to make then most people think.  I had to make a custom one for my v-6 hot rod(it didn't have one when i got it). Didn't have a v-6 shaft so I made one out of a 4cyl, took about a half hour.    Use a High quality pipe cutter though, the "chang wan" ones dont cut a perfect 90.

For those of you planning to use the T-5 Manual, be sure to check an owners manual for this trans.  I was told by someone running a 5.0 Mustang with a T-5 that though it is a Manual trans, it takes Automatic trans fluid.  Apparently he topped off his trans with manual trans fluid and shortly afterwards his gears were torn up.  The shop told him about the trans fluid... very expensive lesson.

Now, mind you this is what I've been told.  I have no experience with this trans, and therefore can't tell you for sure, that is why I suggest you look in an owners manual or shop manual.

Hello Marty and group,
YES! If your tranny has an aluminum case use ATF if cast iron use Gear lube.
If you try to use the gear lube in the T-5 It will ruin the facing on the syncros.
