You dont hear of guys blowing up stock 4 speed trans to much. If you allready have a T5 I'D got that rout if any thing for the over drive.

The stock 4 speed might...might hold up to a "stock" turbo motor. I think you should go with the 5 speed right away. That way you won't have that little voice in the back of your head that is wondering if the trans is going to hold or not. Plus if you plan on make more horse power, the t5 is definitely the way to go. If the motor you are getting doesn't have a t5 on it, you can get one from a mustang from about 84-93. Or even a Ranger of about the same years.

I ran my stock 4 speed for a LONG time and no problems. 18psi and 100 hp NOS on drag radials with a MEAN clutch set-up.

The AOD will be longer, It will not last long behind a healthy 2.3 turbo. Get one from a Turbo coupe and have it built if your gonna put the power to it!

Ok cool my c-4 is out of a Turbo Cougar, anyone need it?(kidding) it's too long by 1/2" (the yoke bottoms in the tailshaft) so the AOD may be the ticket for a mild N/A 2.3

remember mine's a daily driver and i've got a 30mi one way drive. I'll sacrifice top performance for reliability, and comfort.

60 mile trip everyday     GO..with the T5!! I'm running a T5 in my Pinto and with the 3.97 first gear I'm able to have 3.00 gears out back. Still get good performance and good gas mileage because of the over drive.
One more thing..turbo cougars never came with c4s...either it's not a c4, or someone put one in it. Could be a c3.

Title: Hydraulic or cable clutch w t-5 swap?
Post by: Pinturbo on November 30, 2003, 10:46:28 PM
I am going to swap turbo 2.3 into my Pinto this winter. I want to swap the t-5 first and clear up those issues first.  The stock setup is a 4 speed stick and looks almost identical flywheel, bolt pattern on bell housing, and so on.  ONe obvious difference is the clutch accuation. the T-bird that this came out of had a hydraulic clutch.  So here is the question...for those of you who have already done the swap, did you keep your cable clutch or did you adopt the hydraulic clutch and what was needed to make it work in either case?

Well I'm sure someone will jump on my case again, but...this is how...I....did it. I reused the Pinto cable and got a bellhousing from a mid 80's mustang that came with a cable clutch set-up. I reused the Thunderbird pressure plate, clutch and flywheel.

I'm wondering if the clutch fork out of my cable bell housing will fit in the thunderbird hydraulic bell housing.  Did you ever try that?
