i know the bore stroke would be diffrent between the 2 but what are the visible diffrences between the 2.0 and the 2.3
ive been told that when you pull the valve cover off and look the cam the posts holding it straight is diffrent
and the dist is farther back on one
Hey Tude,
The 2.0 and 2.3 Pinto are totally different.
The 2.0 installed in the Ford Ranger engine is closely related to the Pinto 2.3.
The Pinto 2.0 is a solid cam engine with 3 cam towers.
The Only part that will interchange between the Pinto 2.0 and the 2.3 is the rods and then you will need special Pistons as the 2.3 rod is .200 longer.
The standard 2.0 rod is 5.000"
The standard bore is 3.575 W/3.029 stroke, bore spacing is 4.016
The standard 2.3 bore is 3.780 W/3.126 stroke, bore spacing is 4.137

i know the internal parts are diffrent im asking say you pop the hood and just look with every thing still bolted to the motor(all stock) what are the main diffrences to look for in the two
----on a side note---once again sorry bout that pintotony i read that post wrong my bad i blew up just a little bit
Hello Tude,
Any Pinto after 1974 will NOT have the ford 2.0
Any Pinto with the small bumpers will not have a 2.3.
NOW lets say somebody swaps motors in?
The 2.0 has a valve cover that has ribs.
The 2.3 has a mostly flat valve cover.
the 2.0 has curved intake runners and the 2.3 has straight runners.

Hey Tude,
I'm cool with you! Your Cool with me!
I commend you for taking the step back and looking at the problem~

the quickest way to tell a 2.0 from a 2.3 is the oil filter placement. on a 2.0 its close to the front of the engine. On a 2.3 its close to the back.

Harry, That is a good point. It is the "quickest" way to tell. I give Harry a one up for that post.
thats the type of diffrence i was wanting to here more of (rather than whitch motor can in what) becouse i have several rangers and am always working on those 4 bangers but never knew how to tell the diffrence without pulling a piston out and looking at the side of it.
BUT the Ranger 2.0 is the same exact block as the 2.3. only the ranger bore is reduced .260.

hmmmm didnt know that

Well...
That is why you should read carefuly.
This onfo is in my original post on this subject.
Except I could not remember the bore size for the Ranger 2.0 at that time.

The easiest way to tell a ranger 2.0 from a 2.3 is to look at the emissions sticker on the radiator support. :sorry:
Seriously though. If the engine is carbed and the truck has no power steering, no power brakes, no radio, and is a manual, its most likely a 2.0. They were only used in the base model rangers (also known as S-model rangers...S is for stripped) and only came with manual transmissions with NO goodies. They also usualy have a black valve cover instead of grey, like the 2.3
The 83-84.5 2.3's were also carbed, but they usualy always have at least power steering or power brakes.
If it has a weird looking 2bbl carb on it, its an 87-88 2.0 and that carb is probably why you're working on it.
-Harry
the main reason i asked is becouse ive got 2 in pintoes and about 5 out of rangers most are sitting on the floor and torn down a little so that i could rob the things i was needing at the time. so it is kind of hard to tell what is what when its not in the vehichal and you dont have the tools at the time to measure fractions of fractions of an inch.
as far as the ranger you described with no radio no p/s no p/b...... that is mine but mine came factory with air conditioning.
If your truck is/was a 2.0 that is a rare special ordered truck or someone converted it. Unless they have 3.75 gears, the 2.0's barely have enough power to move those trucks with a manual trans, so I would think AC would make them super doggy.
My dad has an 88 2.0 ranger. Its just a basic no-frills truck with no ps/pb/ac, no carpet (rubber mat) a bench seat, solid back glass, and no radio. He added the radio and bench seats. The only thing "rare" about his truck is it has a 3:75 rear end. When he got it, it had the "hitatchi" 2 bbl feedback carb on it and it was slow as molasses. He's since swapped a 2.3 intake and pinto 2bbl on it and it has made a world of difference. Gets 30 mpg too. And its tough enough to do this:

nice hole in the ground, my 83 was a true haus as yours looks, exept i had a 2.3 bored 40 over rods and 20 over mains, straight pipe(4 inch stack for a while), 2 wd, 32inch tires on the back, a home made brush gaurd and bumpers, 60-40 seats out of a 88, and a 4speed i dont remeber the gears it had though.
