Title: My floor pan and plans...
Post by: pintoguy76 on February 02, 2006, 11:30:35 PM
I found a rust free floorpan for my 76 sedan, It came from a wagon but should be the same up front. I then discovered today that I have a small hole in the drivers rear floor pan too. I might be able to have a piece of flat metal welded in place of it, but may also just find another floor pan i dont know. Anyways when i get all the rust holes fixed in the floor (theres not many aside from the drivers front floor pan) then i plan on removing what may and may not remain of the carpet at that point. All the seats will come out too of course. Any trim and stuff will probably come out too. The next step is to clean it all up nice and clean. The use POR15 over the whole floor and probably up the sides a few inches and then up the firewall as much as i can get. If anyone knows any reaon why this would be bad please tell me. The next idea i had was to put the car on ramps and wipe the underside totally clean of  all, dirt, grease, oil, etc. Then do the same to it, cleaning up and rust and stuff i find beforehand. Then after thats dry i planned on coating it with rubberized undercoating. I think between por 15 and undercoating that i should not have a rust problem again for a very long time, and that ill have alot of sound deadening material. My pintos not real quiet on the inside, but part of that is the doors rattling (think it needs hinge pins and bushings pretty bad) and the holes in the floor and lack of carpet in several spots. Again if anyone sees anything wrong with my plans id like to know...i cant imagine there being anything wrong but then again ive never done this before....but it does sound really good. Next step after that is...painting the floor then deciding on colors for the carpet. Im thinking black carpet, and keeping the tan interior, but not sure how that would look.

Hello pintoguy76,
Your plan sounds like a good one.
I'm still not that convinced that POR15 is the miracle they say...
My experience with it is like the plasti-dip stuff. If it starts comming off it will come off in sheets
Getting the area as clean as possible and coating with epoxy primer is what I do.
The rusty areas and welds are first coated with self etching primer.
If you are on a budget?? "who isint" I have found that Qt. cans of rustolieum "NOT SPRAY" brushed or rolled works good.
The NEW formulation of rustoleum is oil based and takes forever to dry
when I do the floor pans...I remove all the seats and store them in the attic of the shop. I use a small hand made wood bench to sit on if I need to move the car.
I also remove all the carpet and tar-paper items to get a good look at what I have to work with.

Yeah i'll be cleaning that stuff all out...all carpet, etc. and definantly doing anything i can to stop any rust. If i find any im gonna try to grind it off first then prime it...por15 says to paint directly over rust but theres no way i can do that. lol.

YES!
BUT!!!!! I find it real funny that when you read the instructions on the back of the can it talks about sand-blasting first.

I dont remember that part, i may not have read all the instructions i dont know. Anyways, i'll be doing whatever i can to remove the rust, and covering it so it *hopefully* wont come back.

A friend of mine who restores alot of cars, uses the spray-in bed liner.  Gets it at Walmart for about 6 or 7 bucks a can.  I did the underside of my 78, and it holds up well!!  Took about 3 cans to do entire underside. Just degrease, scotch brite and spray, looks real good too!!
