Title: t-5 and 8 inch rear question
Post by: pinto_chris on January 31, 2006, 01:08:33 PM
I've been looking for an 8 inch rear end for a while now and all I can find are just the housings around here (Los Angeles area) in the wrecking yards, people have all ready taken the axles and the center sections, how hard would it be to find axles and a center for one or should I just hold out for a complete one. Also what years did the t-5 come with a cable clutch and in what cars, I am going this weekend to try and get this stuff so any help will be greatly appreciated, thanks, Chris

Center sections are the same in Mavericks, older Mustangs, ect, and they all interchange between housings as far as I know. Axles depend on housing.  Older mustangs I believe are alittle wider, and I'm not sure about the Maverick. Brake backing plates off a 6 3/4" will bolt right on as will the drums from a Pinto.

Hello Chris,
If you are wanting to stay with the stock 4 lug wheel bolt pattern?
Look for either V6 Pintos or V6 V8 Mustang II.
Most "NOT ALL" 4 cylinder Pintos and MII are the 6 3/4 rear.
If your looking to swap to the Ford 5-lug then I recomend the Maverick V8 rear.

I used a 68 mustang 8" in mine. The 65/66 v8 rear is narrower then the later ones. Keep in mind these are 5 lug, and not a "bolt in".

Like pintony said, those are the ones with 4 lugs (bobcats too) and will bolt right in. The meatballs should all interchange.

You might want to grab a housing just in case if you can get it at a good price. I know with my luck, if I did not get one, I would find the "guts" all over the place.

As far as the t-5, the t/c's had cables until 86, the 87/88 ones are hyd. I have no clue about the stangs or rangers. You can try turboford.net.

The Fox Mustangs were all cable operated clutches, whether 4 cyl or V8.

I don't know if the bearings could interchange, but a 9 inch has the same spline size a an 8 inch, as long as they are 28 splines that is.  May be able to shorten a longer 9 inch axle and have it resplined. Just an option, someone would have to look in to it .
