Title: Ignition Coil Screw Up
Post by: PinkPintoRacer on January 31, 2006, 11:43:53 AM
Ok, I am a Dumbass.......  I was checking my Tach to see why it would not work, and I disconnected the wires to the coil.  I think I put them back on wrong, cuz now all I get is NOTHING, no power at all.  Did I blow the coil?  What way should I have put the wires back on, I have three wires, one seems to run to the distibutor, the other two I am still tracing...... Help Please.........

The one from the dist. should go to the NEG (-), side of coil as well as the one from your tach, usually a green wire of smaller gauge.  The other should be HOT when key or switch is ON, and should connect to POS(+), side of coil. This is how a points type s done, it may be a little different on a electronic.

Ok, I did that, and still nothing.  It is wired as a race car, with toggle switch and starter button.  Before I screwed with it, I would flip the swith and I would get lights on my guages, now I get nothing.  I ran out of time working on it, but I did verify that the battery is not dead.  So, now do you think I fried the coil?

Which ignition system do you have??  Do you have power coming into, and out of main switch ,and is there power at coil??  If yes, then you may have had fried the coil.  If you have stock type, electronic  ignition, then maybe the brain box.  If you have points, check them and be sure they are working properly.

Hello Pink Pinto racer,
Are you running a Ballast resistor?
Most ballast resistors that I have seen are about 3" long and are made of WHITE or GREY ceramic.
There should be two flat tangs that the wiring goes in and out and then to the coil.

It is a points type distributor, I have looked for the ballast, but I think it might have been moved to under the dash.  Do you think if I put in a new coil, I should be fine........

Hello PPR,
Since the ignition coil does not need to be grounded. ussing a "Known Good" test coil might work.
By just hooking it up "correctly".
Most points type ignitions have some type of ignition resistor.
Are you running all aftermarket wiring?
Does the engine Crank But not fire?

Its a race car, so I guess you could call it aftermarket wiring.  I gotta go out and see if power is getting to the fuse block.  I think that will be my next step.  If that is good, then maybe it is as simple as a blown fuse.......If not, then I think I will re wire the run to the coil

Well, I have power to the solenoid, but nothing going out to it........ so maybe I just fried the solenoid

Thanks for everyones help.  I jumped the solenoid from battery lug to "S" terminal, and it turned over.  Did it once or twice and now it works again.  Maybe it was stuck closed/open.  So everything is good to go.  I am still going to replace it, and the coil.

Now, does anyone know why a Tach would not work, if it is hooked up correctly, do they go bad?

Glad you figured it out!  Tachs do quit working, but check all connections first.  Also, I have seen them not work when sitting around (collects moisture I think), then dry out and work fine.

That might be the problem.  It has been sitting outside for two years..on the CA Coast........  I am going to re run the ground tonight, if that dont work there is always the hammer.

Hey fast34,

My Purple Pinto was down for 5 years and when re-started my tacho acted weired working and then droping to 0.
I was shopping for a NEW tacho and I guess it just quit malfunctioning. I did not even pay that much attention because Cindy and I was at the Columbus swap and we saw some guages and she said Here buy this NEW tacho....
Was not untill then that I reailized my tacho was working. :)
