Ok, I just put a deposit on a running 302. He is pulling it this week and I pick it up on Saturday.
Quick question:
How do I install this in the Pinto to make it run? :( As in, I have fuel, battery, transmission, and motor.
I've been thinking about a Painless wiring kit and converting the fuel injection over to carburated. Motor mounts should be ordered soon.
Other than that... I am at a loss. The last motor I had (2.3T) came with an ECU and complete wiring harness.
I'd really like to have this up and running for my wedding. (Super secret surprise for the soon to be wife) ;D
Ok, any books I should get?
Hi Adam,
It's Kevin from Toronto. Glad to hear that you found a motor. Go to this link (http://www.geocities.com/g_wellwood/automotive/v8pinto.html) for info on how to get the motor into the car.
The wiring will depend on whether you keep the fuel inject. or go carb:
With carb, you can use the factory wiring just by lengthening or shortening it.
With fuel injection it is more complicated. You will need to keep the harness, computer etc and power the computer appropriately. You will also need a high pressure electric fuel pump to feed it.
You don't need an expensive aftermarket wiring harness for either option. Hope this helps.
Kevin.
Kevin!
How's the Pinto? And the wife?
Dad talked me into keeping it fuel injected. Atleast for now. I started thinking ahead to forced induction, if I don't get the numbers I am looking for naturally aspirated.
I'll check out that thread.
I've gotta go to a pick'n'pull and find an ECU and harness, along with a transmission and a few other parts.
So... when are you coming down to drop in the motor. :)
Everything/everyone is fine here. I haven't had a lot of time to work on the Pinto. I did get the engine out and an 8 inch rear end installed so far. I spent the summer converting my daughters 83 Mustang from carb to EFI. That is similar to what you will be doing with your 5.0 efi install. Ley me know if you have questions. I'll try to help. :)
check out the FAQ section, there is a thread dealing with V8 conversions
Kevin and others,
Know where I can get an 88-89 Mustang GT engine wiring harness? I found a '90 for a good price. But it isn't plug and play AND nobody is pointing me to what is different, plugs/sensors/etc. They just said airbags in the 90 and it isn't the same as 88-89 or 91-93... :(
SO, until I get a harness I'm going to start fabbing my rear end in. I got a 8.8" and some 3.73 gears. Still need to find axles and a rear diff... and whatever else. (First time on building a rear end.) Also stripping the interior. Ordering some AccMats carpet in the next few weeks. Also need to clean/grind/paint the engine bay. Replace the steering assembly (lots of play).
I found a '90 A9L ECU, supposedly that's what I need to run this beast. And I have sourced a transmission. Waiting for them to reply to my email. Until I get the transmission, I don't think I will be able to move the motor mount.
78pinto, the FAQ has helped some, I've been posting on Corral.net and a local site trying to get more info on certain specifics too.
Can you get the harness and computer from the same car that the motor is coming from? That would eliminate the guess work.
There are harness and computer differences depending on year, transmission type and other factors. There is a code written on the sticker of the door of the car which identifies parts for the EFI. My daughter's car had 3 different available part numbers for a throttle position sensor in 1988. This code on the door sticker helps to narrow this down.
Having the correct engine/harness/computer will help you to troubleshoot potential drivability problems when you get that engine running. I'm not saying that you can't mix and match, but it would be easier if you don't.
I found these to be helpfull.

Those should get ya there. I wired my A9L and '89 loom using these links. Wait till the end of this coming summer and my A9L and loom will be for sale as i am going to use the Megasquirt stand alone EFI and ignition system on my 351 turbo build. Tranny type doesn't matter much, i have a 5 speed computer in my automatic (C5) pinto. You only need the engine loom and computer, so air bag cars don't make any difference. If your going to soup up the engine (heads, cam, intake, throttle body ect) get a mass air computer and loom ('89-93) but if your going to leave it pretty much stock go with a speed density ECU ('86-88)
Holy cow, thanks for the info.
I'm going to go a head and buy that '90 harness. I had thought it over and was like... "Wait a minute. The airbag sensors are on the chassis harness not the engine harness."
The guy is using his ECU and engine harness to drive his 351w. I agree, it would have been MUCH easier that way. At first I had planned to just go carbed. So I didn't even think of asking for that stuff.
EDIT: I just found a guy selling 2 harnesses and 3 ECUs. :D One is even from an '89 GT. And it is cheaper than the other guy's '90 harness.
when you get a loom, find out what wires you need. Strip the loom cover off and remove the wires you don't need. It makes for a cleaner less balky install. I just wish i had done it before i put it in my car. I joined the EFI loom with the Pinto loom and put them in the same wrap. Have i ever mentioned how much i love to do wiring ::)
