Title: 1980 Gas Tank Problem
Post by: LincoPinto on January 10, 2006, 08:25:08 PM
I just got my first Pinto, it's a 1980 three door hatchback...
My grandfather gave it to me with only 37,000 miles
I plan to do some restoration, and a bit of customization, but mainly leave everything as close to stock as possible.
but one thing I do want to address on the car is the rear impact problem..

What is the best way to fix this?

Thanks.

Welcome.

Ford fixed them in the mid 70's. They put on bigger bumpers, tank sheild, longer filler neck, better tank filler gasket, and maybe a few other things. Make sure the sheild is still on the gas tank, sometimes they get left off when work is done on the tank.

IMO: I think the stock pinto is just as safe if not better than other cars on the road (the early ones too when the recall is done).

If you have any concerns, you need to decide for yourself if this is the right car for you.

With how fast mine is, I am more concerned with how it will do in a front crash.
