I just got my first Pinto, it's a 1980 three door hatchback...
My grandfather gave it to me with only 37,000 miles
One thing I do want to address on the car is the rear impact problem..
What is the best way to fix?
Thanks.
I'm no expert on this, but I'm pretty sure Ford had it fixed by 1980.
The rear impact problem was fixed by 1974. I"ve owned the early pinto's where you lifted the back floor carpet and saw the top of the gastank. And I do mean the top. There was a rubber gasket that sealed the top of the tank from the floor of the back of the vehicle. When the car was hit in the rear, the tank would rupture and the gas slouched into the passenger compartment area. Oh well, so things get better with time.
Hello d_kitchell,
:stop:
You can not see the pinto tank from the trunk on any Pinto.
Well at least unless the complete rear is rusted away.
You must be thinking of the early mustang.

P.S.
The Ford fix did not come untill august of 1975.
Relax youll be fine, Ford fixed the gas tank thing with a flimsy piece of plastic ;). I am racing dirt track with the factory fuel tank in its factory location, and I have hit everything and been hit by everything and it didnt blow up.
