hello, i have a project going i recently pulled my 2.3motor out of my 79 pinto and it all taken apart but i cannot get the oil seals out of the head, auxzillary shaft and the crankshaft oil seal will not come out either is there a special way to do it or what?
also is there anything i should watch out for while im rebuilding my engine?
thanks lostandfound
I just use a old straight screwdriver that I can hammer on and dig them out, since you will be installing new ones you dont have to get them out in one piece.
I am not a Pinto guy(bought one today) but have 25 + years as a mechanic.
On stubborn seals if you do not have access to a seal pick then...
Drill a small hole 1/16 or so in the metal face of the seal....Most are metal under the rubber coating.
Then thread a sheet metal screw into the hole. You then have a great thing to pry against or attach vice grips to to yank that seal right out!
Be sure to get the metal filings out from drilling the seal. Very thick grease on the end of the drill bit will help in that regard..the shavings sticking to the grease while drilling the hole.!
If you do resort to a screwdriver...be very careful not to scratch the cam or cranks sealing surfaces..(experience on Porsche...very costly for me) if you do...sand the gouges smooth with emery paper after seal is removed before driving or pressing in new seal.
Hope this helps....I have many Pinto questions so I will share my basic tips for this kind of stuff when I see it.
Bye for now Dave PS I love the spell check on this board....Boy if you could have seen this post before it:)
