Title: Firewall in a pinto
Post by: PinkPintoRacer on January 03, 2006, 03:40:40 PM
This may be a strange question, but here goes.  I am required to have a firewall between the driver and the fuel cell.  The car is a 1975 Pinto Runabout.  The previous owner installed the fuel cell, and it peeks up over sheet metal about two inches.  Would my best solution be building a lid over that, or I could put a trunk lid that I have on the car, then sheet metal down from there...Ideas wanted..

The trunk cars are easier, yes.

I would talk to the tech person at the track you plan to run, they might be able to give you an idea of what they are looking for (thickness,..). It would not be fun to have to do it twice. The tech guy at my old track would give people a hard time about things if you did not ask him first. Depending on how far up it is, you might have to make a hinged top above the trunk lid.

When I put the rear firewall in the saturn it went well into the back seat area, but well within the rules.

Thanks Bill,  The good thing is the rules say 18 gage or thicker for a firewall, so that is not an issue.  I am leaning toward building a box over it out of 18g, then either have it Druz down, or hinged...

I'm planning on doing something similar, but more like a modern hatchback's rear dash.  Basically a curtain-rod sort of hinge at the front and cables attached to the hatch.  When you lift the hatch, the dash comes up with it, when you close it, it will have a little less than a quarter inch clearance on each side.  We plan to put a drop pan in the trunk to lower the fuel cell, providing the clearance on top.

We are pretty sure it will pass.
