Rag joint replacement on my project is giving me headaches.
Taking a look at my daily driver's steering for reference ('79 hatchback), the shafts are right up tight against the rag joint, bolted together.
But when I go to work on my '74, THIS is as close as I can get things together, NO FURTHER (I'm actually pulling them together in the pic).
Everything is as it was in the car when I got it; the old biscuit had deteriorated to the point of falling apart, but I haven't removed or replaced shafts, steering, or had the column out.
Anyone have any idea why this is happening? Were there spacers or something that might have fallen out? Even so, the bolts would be too short...arrgh..
Any help appreciated-
Paul
It looks like you are working on it in the car? If so, maybe the column shaft slid up into column? Maybe try and take the column off and attach the rag joint and then see if you can pull the column back into place? Not sure what to tell you here. I have done 3 of them in the past couple years and have not had any trouble getting everything to mate back together. good luck.....
Well, there's a good idea, I'll give it a shot!
Thanks
Paul
Please use lock-nuts, for safety sake. Can't really tell if those are, but they don't look like it. Lock-washers just don't do the job as well.
