Title: tilt steering column
Post by: squidd78v6 on December 04, 2005, 06:42:42 PM
hey

I was wondering if anyone has ever tried to convert their car to a tilt column set up. I am 6'4" and with myself "stuffed" in my car I can not read the speedometerabove 25mph. I kind of have to slouch down really bad when I am driving and would prefer not to have to. If anyone has any experince on what would work I would really apprecite it.

I think I read somewhere that the tilt column from an 80's T-bird would work, but don't hold me to that...

Just out of curiosity, do you have an aftermarket wheel on your pinto?  My 73 came with a grant GT wheel which I actualy liked the feel of (smaller than stock) but I couldn't see my speedo from around 35 or so ti'll 80, nor could I see the high-bean indicator or half of the fuel gauge.  I'm 6-1.  I wound up having to put a stock wheel back on.

yep,

I have an autotechnica brand wooden steering wheel. came with the car. I have just enough leg room as it is so going with the stock if it is bigger might pose some problems.

Thanks

I put a tilt column from a 77-79 T-Bird/LTD II/COUGAR in my 77 Pinto Wagon, had to modify it a bit and it is a bit longer, but you can collaps it a bit.

Is this a tilting and telescoping column? I'm also VERY interested in this subject.  I am 6'8" and will have to mount my drivers seat about 4 inches back from the standard position - a longer/telescoping column would be great.

Hi.. I also went with the smaller grant gt wheel ..thinking that the smaller wheel would make it easier to get in and out..I`m 6` but make up for it in girth..lol..and like the others found out after that it made seeing the dash more difficult and didn`t help cause it seems that the bottom of the steering wheel stayed the same place..only saved space at the top where it wasn`t needed..but I liked the look and it felt better driving..so I left it in... ;D

No not telescoping.
