Title: starter for a V8 conversion
Post by: gearhead440 on November 30, 2005, 09:52:05 AM
When changing over to a V8 coupled to a 5 speed manual, what type of starter should I use?  I have read in other posts to use the 92 mustang high torque starter when running headers.  These starters are a bit pricey, but could be worth it if space becomes a premium and the starter is completely inaccessable  :o.   I will be using MII exhaust manifolds and was wondering what others have used in their conversions.  Thanks!

I went to a local NAPA parts store and got a stock starter for my 302 and it has the fenderwell exit headers, they shold be able to cross reference for your application. I think the starter was around $30-$40, there was plenty of clearance, I did have to remove the right side mountto install it,  or if you are installing the engine and trans together install the starter before putting the engine in.

I did a search at Advanceautoparts.com for a 78 MII w/ 302 and MT and came up with the following: Palladium premium reman, P3154, $40, with remans from Beck/Ancheaper $35-$40, and an Autolite Pro, A3153 for $55.  They weigh around 18 lbs, btw.  Something interesting is that the starters for a 92 mustang are around $120 or more but are smaller and weigh around 9 lbs.
