Hi ..this is what I did.....to just about anything that needed cleaning including the carb....soak it in a pail of varsol(paint thinner) whichever is cheapest..overnight..you will surprised at the gunk that`ll come off..I didn`t have trouble afterwards but to be honest I started the turbo project shortly after. Hope this helps

When you take it apart be careful not to break the gaskets.
If the gaskets break and tear you will need a kit.
Get 1 or 2 cans of spray carb cleaner and clean it out use the straw that comes with the can and spray it through
all the holes in the carb.
I have cleaned carbs like this.

if you end up tearing the gaskets you will need the re-build kit, like bill has said. however, there were two different types of carbs used on the pintos (assuming your using a 4-cyl). one was a really popular carb that is easily available on the counter from auto zone, the other not so popular will be extremely hard to find. all i can say is, good luck, be carefull and check e-bay often if you break one of them gaskets. have fun! ;D
