Title: cylinder head swap? what fits
Post by: blades2ko on November 16, 2005, 06:31:39 PM
I'm an Ivy tech student in evansville indiana. i'm rebuilding 2300 pinto engine with oval ports. this engine was given to me by a friend. i had the money until a tornado hit my parents home. know that i have little cash and i have a dead line in 3 weeks. i went to go and pull one out of the junk Yard but no pintos and a few amounts of rangers, most without top ends. what else could match up?

All rwd 2.3 heads will interchange, but there are different ones.

If you just need a head, look in mustangs/IIs, bobcats, capris, bronco IIs too.

Try this too: http://car-part.com/cgi-bin/search.cgi

Hello blades2ko,
Sorry to hear about your family's misfortune with that tornado.
Where do you live?
If I'm close I be happy to help if I can.

Hey there ,sorry to hear of your parents situation. This should make us all more thankfull of what we do have .Hope you guys recover soon.
Ebay is my favorite place for parts .if no one can help you here. I checked tonight and there are a few on ebay . take a look. Just be carefull that look for good pictures and a good reputation on the seller. And ask for a quote before you bid so you dont get stuck with OUTrageous shipping charges probably cost about 60 for one head to go across the country.(i have shipped 302 v8 heads in one box before and only cost me $65.)
If you have a choice take a 'D' port head . they are the best performance stock 2.3 . An oval port is the next choice. Id stay away from the ranger heads. They dont flow well, and the later models have a dual plug head with a different intake pattern from the fuel injected manifold. So youd have issues getting the stock intake manifold to fit. HOWEVER if you could get a Ranger Roller cam, followers, and 'lifters' from a late model it will slide right into a early model head. Its a good cam and the wear issue is virtually gone.

Anyways Good luck on your time issue, I understand what you speak of.
have to have my car running , registered and out of my buddies garage by the end of the year.

HUGE NOTE!!!!! if the car your taking the head off of has a timing chain or a DOHC (I.E. focus, or escort zx2) with timing chain, the heads will not work properly!!! be advised, that is all!  ;D

Tempo and topaz also has a 2.3 with the INCORRECT head. Mustang, ranger, pinto, maverick, courier pickup are the best places to find a good 2.3 head. Im sure there are a couple others that i am forgetting. Those are the main ones tho.

One more detail: Depending on the year of the head and/or the intake being used, you might need to drill and tap another hole in the head.
