Title: mating up v8 and trans.
Post by: busaman on November 15, 2005, 09:45:22 PM
I was wondering if anyone knew about any problems with putting together a 95' 5.0 crown vic motor with a C-4 trans out of a 76 turino. I'm hoping they match up because I got into both of them fairly cheap. Both have to have a rebuilt of course. Ill be putting it all in a 76 cruzin wagon with the lil' round window in back. Its been in the family for 29 years. Dad bought it new and I got it 10 years ago in high school and have always wanted to throw a small block in it. So I guess I'm the second owner. Anyways, I will be trashing the EFI and will be going with a carb instead and I have also ordered the mustang II motor mounts. Thanks for any help.

Hello busaman,
The problem with mating a new motor with an old tranny is that the late motors are 50oz counter balance flywheels and the early are 28 oz.
You will need a flywheel from a ford bronco "I THINK"
Maybe someone here can elaborate on this subject?
Sorry I do not have the part numbers for you.
BUT you are sitting in front of the information just use your search engine to find out the "FACTS" about making your swap work.

hey there busaman!
Any small block 260,289,302,5.0 ,351 5.8 will bolt to the C4. The issue is you need the correct bell for the flywheel .They came in teeth sizes of 164, 157, and the mustang ll of 144 ( dang now that I'm trying to sound smart i cant remember if those are exact #s  LOL ) .
Then, as tony has mentioned, yes you need the correct flywheel for the Damper, So if you were going to make it 'easy'  you get the flywheel from a late model C4 or C5 and then realize its to big or small for the bell. Or you get a bell and then cant find the correct flywheel for the balance you need. I'm probably over complicating this as I'm not an expert but i have done a little research and this is what i did.
I used a mustang ll bellhousing, a mustang ll flywheel, and a late model 5.0 .  I had the machine shop modify ,and add weight to the flywheel to make it a 50oz balance from a 28oz . Then they balanced the whole reciprocating assy. WHY?? Well in the 71 I'm doing the engine compartment is shorter by 4 or 5 inches and i was trying to shorten up as much as I can, so i used the late model explorer balancer, and its 50 oz . Also the Mustang ii bell is smaller and allowed room for less hammering of the tunnel and let me use modified Mustang ii headers that exit under the car and not out the fender wells. Otherwise the headers would've hit the bell if i used the much more common 157 tooth flywheel bell combo.  (Hopefully everything will work out)
Ive heard that the early mustang 28oz balancer is just as short as the lat3 model but the pulleys and become an issue for the alternator and water pump.
Oh and by the way ,where are you ordering the Mustang ll mounts from? those are usually only available NOS and for MEGA bucks.

You'll also need a Mustang ll oil pan, OR a Milodon deep sump pan. The milodon is pricey but the mustang ll is hard to find. Stay away from the China copies as they don't provide the clearance for the rack .

For exhaust you want Mustang ll headers from the 70's Old blackjacks or cyclones work well, but I modified mine so that the engine would sit lower. They are only 1.5 dia so don't expect monster horsepower. Prob 300-350 is the max with those headers There a set on EBAY right now FYI. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/FORD-MUSTANG-II-V8-EXHAUST-HEADERS-NO-RESERVE_W0QQitemZ8015660804QQcategoryZ33631QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/FORD-MUSTANG-II-V8-EXHAUST-HEADERS-NO-RESERVE_W0QQitemZ8015660804QQcategoryZ33631QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) Hurry though.
if you don't want the hassle of headers you can use the early LOG style manifolds from the old mustangs that exit straight back.

Late model shorties wont fit , unless you point them forward and the tubing then goes under the crossmember.
Don't forget the mandatory 8 inch rear from the v6 model pinto or a mustang ll . Its a bolt in swap, wheels and all.
Oh and don't trash the efi if its MAF. If it is, Ebay is a great source for offloading things you'd never guess would sell.
I'm by no means the expert here on Fordpinto but i know what Ive done and whats worked for me so far.

Good luck and keep asking questions ! Also keep poking around the search of the forums and the Projects forum. Theres a few guys there that have done some nice work and documented some issues regarding there V8 swap.
