i got a 1980 2.3/auto and the choke doesn't seem to work correctly. it closes all the way but doesn't seem to be opening all the way. also if i "kick it down" off of high idle it will be fine but if i give it any gas or take off it will go back to high idle and won't go back down. any ideas. i've moved the thingy on the side to lean out or richen up the choke, doesn't make a difference.thanks in advance for any help
Hello Rob,
Unlike the early Pinto that has heat coming from the cooling system for the choke.
Your 80 Pinto has a simple electric choke.
First make sure that your wiring is in good condition.
There should be a wire that looks like photo below.
Make sure you are getting 12 volts to this wire by using a tester.
If you do not have a tester?
A turn signal bulb 1157 can be used to test the 12 volt source.
"A pair of gator clips come in handy here"
THE IGNITION SWITCH MUST BE IN THE ON-RUN POSITION!!!!!!
When your confident you have power to this wire the its time to remove the air cleaner "If you haven't alredy done so" and remove the choke housing remove the 3 screws and pull the housing off the carb. This part is most likely bad and needs to be replaced. TAKE THIS PART TO THE AUTO SUPPLY STORE!
Hope this helps from Pintony
