Title: Steering Rack Boots
Post by: LowFlyer on September 22, 2005, 08:46:53 PM
Has anyone had experience finding new, cheap steering rack boots?  Napa offered to sell me boots at about $35 EACH.  Similar boots for other cars seem to run about $15.  Any advice on retail outlets or web stores would be great.  (BTW - I ordered some from rockauto.com and promptly got an email appology from them that they were out of stock, backordered, and their manufacturer (Moog) had no information on when they would be available.)

ps - This is my first post.  I've got a '72 wagon and I'm using a junked '76 pony for parts on a custom car.

I just bought some at autozone for $10 a piece.  They are universal but they seem to be pretty nice.  Hope this helps

Hey KC8LQU, thanks for the reply.  I'll check out autozone, there's one near by.  If you have the part number from the box or receipt, please post that too.

Found them!  The lead to autozone was the key.  I found out that they have a fairly good web site and got the part number UF2020 looking for steering rack boots.  It actually took a few tries, that site isn't perfect.  And, when I got to the store, the number they showed was 06370, with the other as an alternate number.

Anyway, it looks like they will work.  Funny thing though, both ends are obviously formed to be trimmed to size, but the instructions say not to cut the big end.  I think maybe it's a language thing and they meant not to tear it when installing.  Without trimming, the hole is way to small.

These are called "Speedi-Boot!" (and yes, the ! seems to be part of the name) and they were behind the counter along with the CV joint boots.  The UF2020 part number was for a "cosmos bellows kit".

Hey guys just had to chime in,you ought to actually check out the rack they have for the 71-72 pinto. it cost 159 2 years ago without the core charge. Its made in the USA and its got a cool chrome tube and a nice custom look. check the pic out on my car. If the boots on your old one are needing recplacement then its prob time for a new rack also, Just a thought.
Good luck,
Robert
