Title: timing belt alignment 73 2.0l
Post by: pintowgn73 on September 21, 2005, 08:54:54 PM
ok, so I have gone through this forum and searched for this. no one has given a clear way to check the timing belt on a 2.0l. my 73 has a rough idle and a very bad flat spot in the power bandfrom about 1/4 to 3/4 throttle. I have tried to check the timeing and it is WAY off on the crank shaft with the light. I can see the pointy mark on the camshaft but I don't have any idea where to line it up with. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

jim.

There should be a dot on the block under the cam timimg pully.
Line the pointer on the cam pulley backing plate up w/ the dot./

Hello pintowgn73.
The Pointer should be at the bottom 6-Oclock and pointing straight UP.
The dot that mcrouthamel refers to is actually a spot face or drilled hole in the head NOT the block.
What carb are you running?
Are you checking the timming with the vacuum advance disconnected?
What modifications have you made to your engine?
Header? big cam? manifold?
Be sure to check the PCV valve and the hose running to the PCV valve.
Make sure the 'CLAMP that goes to the nipple on the manifold is tight.
Do you still have the Decel Valve in place?
Is the diaphram leaking?

car is completely stock. stock carb, exaust everything. sticker is still on the valve cover, has new points, cap, rotor and wires. I have replaced the intake manifold gasket and carb base gasket due to a vacuum leak, but have been unable to find any info for checking the timing belt to see if it was set right. I've had the car for about 2 years or so and have only put maybe 3-400 miles on it. here's a pic of my engine compartment

Hello pintowgn73,
Yor engine looks great! I love the look of the 2.0. SIMPLE :)
Anyhow... Have you checked your decell valve?
Is the clamp on the PCV hose tight?
If your timming mark is that far off I would say that your timming belt has stretched beyond its useability.
Or your crank gear has wear way beyond use. OR both.
Just things to take a look at.

yeah, I checked all the vacuum lines, pcv, etc. I looked at the timing marks last night and the marks are off. with the cam at the mark, the crank is at about 12deg btc. I'm going to get a new belt and throw it on and see how the car runs.

Hey Pintowagon73,
While changing your timming belt.

Make sure you take a good look "WITH A FLASHLIGHT" at the crank timing gear.
I have seen these gears worn 1/4 of the way through the cog.
