Title: question about pinto V8 swap
Post by: IWANTAPINTO on September 21, 2005, 03:50:14 PM
I was wondering if the manual transmission, drive shaft and rear axle from  an 80's mustang would fit in/on my 1978 pinto hatchback. If any of them will, please reply, and fill me in on the modifications i will need to make if there are any.

Any thing will fit given enough time and money.

ok let me rephrase that a little. Will the manual transmission and rear end from an 80s mustang fit into my 1978 pinto hatchback easily?

The term "easy" is very subjective. I did a t/c swap into my pinto, and I think it was easy.

Tranny: The worst case would be you would have to do one or more of the following even if the tranny bolts to your engine: modify the tranny mount, have the driveshaft length changed, re-locate the hole in the floor for the shifter, splice the wires to the tranny, convert the clutch linkage or type(rod/cable/hyd.), open the tunnel with a big hammer to fit the bell (MII v8's have a very small bell housing. MIIs and pinto's are not identical).

Rear: No, 80's stangs have coil springs. You would need to do lots of work to it. You can get an 8" from a mid 70's pinto/bobcat/mustangII, they bolt in. I have been told that a granada rear will fit with minor work. I installed one from a 60's stang with not too much effort.

77TurboPinto is correct. And he did not even mention getting the pipes set up or the radiator thing worked out or the transmission cooling lines or the powersteering lines. I used a c4 out of a grand marquee. And I mean to tell you it was not "easy". But I did it!!!!!
