I would like to change the rear main seal on my daughters 76 pinto wagon. It is a 4cyl automatic. I went to O'Riellys to order the seal and the computer called for a 2-piece or a 1-piece rope seal, The parts guy did not know which one my car needed so I ordered the 2-piece, and my Haynes does not specify nor does anyone I know remember much about the pinto. I would like to know if My car takes the 2-piece or does it matter? Please help. Thank You! AL.
The rear main seal should be a ( 1) piece, round seal........ :o
1-piece round seal, gotcha. Thanks
My pintos have the 2 part ones in the stock engines. The turbo engine has the round rubber seal.

1 piece rear main seal or 2 piece seal????
HMMM>>>..... :-\
I LOVE THIS GROUP!!!!!!
All 2.3 OHC engines built before 9/28/81 had a 2-piece rear main seal.
1.6 & 2.0 had a 1-piece seal for the rear main.
Source Ford Parts Catalog.
1976 is the two piece rear main seal. Just did it the other day to a 76. Like it was said earlier the one piece didn't come into play until the 80's. Hope this helps.
