I have an 8" in the Pinto right now. It's an open diff though, which completely sucks. I haven't even upped the boost from the factory 'Low' setting and it's still not much fun because of lack of traction.
I found an 8" semi-locally that's from an A-code Mustang, supposedly 67-68. It's an 8", but...
-Will the center section bolt into the housing I have now from a 76 Mustang II?
-Is an A-code (4v 289 4 sp. manual) diff open or not? I DID search...
-Will the axles work or are they different spline counts?
That said, the Pinto is up and running, but not breaking any records right now. It's stupid little stuff that's holding it back, too. I'm not sick of it, but a little tired of it since I've been working on it during every spare moment for about the part month. For now, I'm going to cover it up and just let it sit for a bit while I do more research and get the desire back.
Any info on the axle stuff is appreciated!
-Mike
Hey Mike,
All 8" rear axels are the same (28 spline).
Any 8" carrier will fit any 8" housing.
Expect to pay 500.00+ for any 8" posi unit.
Sorry I can not help you out with the A-code thing.

Uh, I hate to disagree BUT. actually, the early 8" axles are about 3/8" longer and have a smaller OD in the mid shaft area than the later axles and the early axles are 5 lug. The carriers are the same except the later models have more webbing around them and are considered stronger. The early housings also have the spring pearch about 1/4 out board and the end flange is slightly different.

Hey Brad,
I do not see where you disagree with what I said.
You just added info not needed to answer Mike's question
Mike, its a possibility but you would have to run the door tag for sure. If I remember correctly, the early cars came with equa-loc rear ends.
OK, those are great replies, guys!
So it looks like I might be able to get a factory unit that'll work, even though it's an earlier unit. That's a good thing. The longer axles COULD be a good thing, especially if it could work as a way to get 5 lug wheels to work... hmmm... OK, well if the thing turns out to be a Trac-Loc, or sometype like that, I might go for it and see what I can make work.

NICE one Tigger!!!
Great going!!!
I always forget about the Equa-Loc Ford posi on the early Mustang.
Good posi for the street.
Have heard many stories about the Equa-loc NOT being that good????
The Equa-loc Posi has a "Wave Washer" spring. Instead of the 4 coil springs like the T-lock found in the 70"s 8"rear.
Somebody give Tigger a 1-UP! :)

Also looking into a Powertrax No-Slip. It'll go right in, and is a racheting type of locker thing. It's about $377, from what I've found so far. I just wonder how strong it is. It'll be under a lightweight car though (BTW- got the Pinto weighed with the 2.3 swap, T5 and a set of Mustang 10-holes - 2280 lbs).

Mike, I am running the PowerTrax No-Slip in my 8" rear and installed it my self. Its pretty easy. As for strong, It is the preferd locker of the Jeep guys in their 4X4 rock crawlers and they sware by it. They have got big V8 engings with monster torque.

Mike, Im not sure but I think they can be had for the high $290.00s at Summitt. I think there is a section for Jeeps/trucks you can find one priced less??? check it out.
Hey Brad,
While we are on the Posi subject.
I see 8" posi's on ebay.
I know that the factory posi was spot faced on the ring gear bolts.
What kind of posi units-parts are they installing in the open 8" rears to make them posi???????
From Pintony
P.S.
OK I see like Paul Harvey Getting "the rest of the story" COOL!
I keep saying that 2 brains are almost as good as SHINEY
I have my eye one 2 right now on ebay, but neither one seems to actually be a posi. Rather, the sellers don't know if they are...somehow. I sent messages to them, but haven't heard back yet. I'm liking the Locker idea so far, and maybe I'll just keep my eyes open for one to show up.
But I don't wanna pay $400+ for one... That'll blow the budget if I truly want to do the GRM challenge!

Thanks Pintony! I have been around Mustangs all my life. I have heard the same thing about the Equa-loc's that is why I have a 9" 4 pinion trac-loc stashed away for my next Mustang project ;D
I had to grind the inside of my 3rd member housing a bit to clear the posi unit. I'm not sure which one it was but I did buy it off ebay, as a rebuilt factory 4 pinion Bronco posi unit, and it's worked perfect.
