Title: Carburetor problems
Post by: Tercin on August 27, 2005, 05:47:20 PM
I could use some help with my carb. I put a rebuilt carb on my 73 2000cc pinto with an auto trans and CA emissions and A/C. I am getting a surge when it idles. I have checked for vacuum leaks I have checked the distributor for advance, it seems to be advancing. I have used a mityvac tester to see if it holds vacuum, it does. All the gaskets are tight, manifold to the head, carb to the manifold etc. I have a gasket on the manifold then a divider plate then the thick gasket then the carb. I put these items on the way they came off. The carb came from Carburetor exchange in Phoenix, I sent them my carb and they matched it up and sent me a rebuilt unit. Pintony said I may need a pcv valve. I got a new one from carquest. I cannot find where it goes, according to my manual it is not where it is supposed to be. The car will run down the road but has a hesitation as well as a surge both when driving and at idle. I can't get it to idle smooth. While the carb was off I degreased the engine compartment and generally cleaned things up, that was a couple of weeks ago so anything that got wet should be dry I made sure the intake manifold was covered so no water could enter it. I checked all the connections and everything seems to be in the right place.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Pintony

It was runing ok but had some hesitation problems. The bushings on the butterflies were worn. I didn't have any of the other problems. i just worked on the new carb. The idle enrichment valve in the bottom of the bowl is not as good as it could be. Also the hole that is screws into seems clogged. I put air pressure to it and it wouldn't not pass anywhere. Is it supposed to be open is ther a check valve?

The PVC valve is located under the intake manifold on the side of the block.
There is a small round edge rectangular box stuck in a 1/2 to 3/4 inch hole (not sure of size).
The PVC valve is stuck in the top of this.
There should be a hose running from the side of the manifold going to the PVS valve.
If one or both of the above mentioned holes are visible, you are missing something, like the PVC valve and or the oil seperator that the PVC valve plugs into.
If you are are missing the seperator, I have 1 from blocks sold the a fomula continental guy. He didn't need it.
Hope this helps,
Mark

Thanks for the info. Someone put a hose in the top of the breather you spoke of then ran that to the intake manifold, there doesn't appear to be any leaks. I put a vacuum tester on it and all appears okay. I sent my carb out to Las Cruces NM to Pony carburetors. I am waiting to hear from them. I read about Pony Carbs in some of my Mustang mags and also on this site.
