So, I finally did it. Over the weekend, I left the gas cap on the roof of my Pinto when I left the gas station. First time I've done it in the 8 years I've been driving the car.
The one I had was painted semi-gloss black, and it looked really sharp on the car, as the rest of the car is black & red.
I looked on ebay for an NOS one, but most of the ones on there are chrome with the black bar that screws on.
Does anybody know of a place to get a paint-able gas cap? Or am I going to have to try scuffing the chrome one and painting it?
Thanks!
Look on other Ford models because the cap should be the same.
Found two at ford pinto gas caps. One black / one blue.
I found mine on ebay last summer at Ford Pinto NOS. Not cheap - approx. $60 + shipping.

On my old 77 I had a Stant gas cap and got it to be able to be painted. I can't recall what I did to it, but it's possible I cleaned it with laquer thinner, did a light sanding with a high grit sandpaper, primed, and painted. When the 77 went to the new owners the cap still held on to the paint so I must have done something right when prepping it.

I actually considered going that route but with a color like orange, I figured if it didn't work and I ended up needing a stock gas cap later, matching the paint would be a problem. I was already into the paint and bodywork to the tune of nearly $5000 so I figured another $60 wasn't going to make that much difference.
